Oulton Broad Water Sports Centre is a recognised RYA training centre and is fully equipped with all the safety equipment, including power boats which provide the safety support needed for water sports training. Our experienced instructors are able to provide RYA Level 1 & 2 tuition for new powerboat users. The Safety Boat Course is suitable for those wishing to extend their skills and qualifications.

RYA Powerboat Level 1 – Start Powerboating

Minimum age: 8

A one day introduction to Powerboating with no previous experience required. Teaching basics, including launch and recovery (8-11 year olds to observe), preparation of boat and crew, boat handling, picking up and securing to a mooring buoy, leaving and coming alongside, man overboard (theory). This course provides a practical introduction to boat handling and safety in powerboats. It covers boating techniques for launching and recovering a boat from a road trailer, everyday boat handling and the use of safety equipment. The course may be conducted in a variety of boat types, both planing and displacement, and the certificate issued will be endorsed to show the type of boat in which the training took place.

RYA Powerboat Level 2

Minimum age: 12 (candidates under the age of 16 will be issued with an endorsed certificate)

This two day course will teach you close quarters boat handling, planing speed manoeuvres, man overboard recovery and collision regulations. By the end of the course you should be able to handle a powerboat in familiar waters by day.

Provides the skills and background knowledge needed by the competent powerboat driver and is the basis of the International Certificate of Competence. It aims to teach boat handling and seamanship in powerboats. It focuses on low speed close quarters handling, man overboard recovery, an introduction to driving at planing speed, and collision regulations. The course can be taken at an inland or coastal location. It may be conducted in a variety of boat types, both planing and displacement. The certificate issued will be endorsed to show the type of boat in which the training took place.

RYA Safety Boat Course

Minimum age: 16

This two day course will teach you how to manage groups of craft, and the appropriate recovery techniques. On completion of the course you will be competent to provide safety cover in a racing or training environment. Should have a basic understanding of sailing boats and windsurfers. RYA Powerboat Level 2 certificate must be held prior to this course.
